Nuit’s corruption of human blood works similarly, to some degree, as that of other demons from the Outer Darkness. Being a goddess more aligned with the night and death, her minions walk a line between the living and the dead. However, while her curse affects the spirit and is spiritual in essence, blood is a physical corporeal substance native to the Physical World. Like all genetic material in this chaotic place, every time a vampire forms, there stands a chance for mutation within their strain. Oftentimes, on these rare occurrences, the afflicted vampire obtains a singularly useful ability- perhaps to shape-shift or to sexually reproduce. In some cases, due to circumstances in a given area or population, a vampire strain might spread like wildfire. It could also be that people of certain descent and DNA might be more prone to become particularly affected by strains of vampirism.

The Rabid Strain, also called The Rabid, are an extremely rare form of vampire. In fact, they may only exist in myth itself. It is said that if a nosferatu devolves to a certain point, yet is not quite a Starved, their bitten victims will rise, instantly, as one of the Rabid. Rabids have very pale or even white flesh with white, soulless eyes and mouths lined with large, sharp teeth. They can run and move incredibly quickly, scale sheer walls, and even skitter on ceilings. These vampires retain no memories of their former existence. In the current world it is likely that only the nosferatu, Brone Lorcan, would be capable of producing these creatures through his bite.

Though their progenitor would have normal reasoning and thinking abilities, the rabids are slavering and animalistic. They are much more akin to the Starved than a normal vampire, but they are psychically linked to the nosferatu that created them. As long as they maintain a certain proximity to this master, they will be less aggressive and work like a team of ants at the beckon of said master. If, however, the rabids move too far away, then they will become bloodthirsty and insane. They have no concept of self preservation beyond hiding from the sunlight, and desire only to bite, infect, and fornicate. If their creator is killed, then all the rabid from his own victims down to the final target of one of the other rabids, also become nothing more than dust. It is thought this might be where the idea of a “head vampire” comes from.
