Nuit’s corruption of human blood works similarly, to some degree, as that of other demons from the Outer Darkness. Being a goddess more aligned with the night and death, her minions walk a line between the living and the dead. However, while her curse affects the spirit and is spiritual in essence, blood is a physical corporeal substance native to the Physical World. Like all genetic material in this chaotic place, every time a vampire forms, there stands a chance for mutation within their strain. Oftentimes, on these rare occurrences, the afflicted vampire obtains a singularly useful ability- perhaps to shape-shift or to sexually reproduce. In some cases, due to circumstances in a given area or population, a vampire strain might spread like wildfire. The Bruxan Strain or Bruxan Vampires have generally misshapen and monstrous bodies. Having developed sometime around the 9th century in what is now Portugal, around the time the Visigoths settled nearby, they can be mostly found there and in Spain, though some traveled aboard ships with humans to the Latin Americas. The afflicted lose all body hair and are brutally violent by nature. The strain causes all Bruxans to gain magical wielding abilities. They can learn spell casting with ease.
Generally secretive and often shunned by other vampires, the Bruxan find their kin often more than happy to employ them as warlocks, mages, and other such positions. Bruxan vampires emphatically trust their own, being generally so isolated, and distrust all other vampires to great degree. They also tend to have issues controlling their blood thirst and can be witnessed by humans if they engage in a feeding frenzy. It is not uncommon for Bruxan to be sailors, and, in fact, it was a Bruxan cargo ship that brought the Countess Elizabeth Báthory to Portland.
